We manage 20 ocean going oil tankers, ranging from ships and barges. Several months ago one of our barges was struck while alongside a dock in Houston ship channel by a fully loaded ocean going cargo ship, rupturing 2 of the port side ballast tanks, creating a hole 10 feet by 20 feet. Texas Commercial Diving was called on short notice and made themselves available to conduct the initial inspection of condition and performed emergency underwater weld repairs to add steel structure for the barge to make the transit across the Gulf of Mexico from Houston to Tampa, where the repair shipyard is located. At this time, there was recently weather in the Houston area that caused the water to become extremely muddy. Due to these conditions, underwater visibility was limited to only a few inches at best. With this limited visibility, Texas Commercial Diving conducted the underwater steel repair mostly by sense of touch. The barge successfully transited the Gulf of Mexico, safely arriving to the repair dry dock in Tampa. When the barge was out of the water on the dry dock to make permanent hull repair and I could lay eyes on Texas Commercial Diving emergency repair. The work performed was impressive and far better than expected with the limited visibility. The steel structure that was installed was just as it was designed to be.
